Threshold Image Mode or Pass-Through option for Images
While XCS does a fair job processing bitmap images, a large portion of the laser community uses 3rd-Party options such as Imag-R to process and dither bitmap images for engraving. As of right now, there are no Bitmap options that will cleanly allow for using images that are dithered prior to importing into XCS. Imag-R has been and is continually improved with laser engraving in mind.
You either leave it set to grayscale which seems to add gray tones to the pre-dithered image, or you have to chose one of the other dithering methods in the list which results in the image being dithered twice. Either of these options ruin the quality of the image trying to burn.
Lightburn has a couple of options for handling bitmap images that are dithered prior to import:
1: Threshold mode. "Simple black and white - use for outlines or images dithered outside of..."
This will read the existing dither and reproduce it exactly as it is.
2: Pass-Through. "Do not resample the image internally - DPI / Interval will be directly tied to the size of the image.
Pass-Through is the mode generally used when engraving images pre-dithered before importing into Lightburn.
While XCS does a fair job of processing images with its available dither options, the option to pre-dither before import using Image-R, PhotoGrav, or other industry-leading utilities that prepare bitmap images for laser engraving would be a benefit to xTool users.
