D1 with a 40W laser module.

There is no doubt that the 40W laser module can be used on the D1 Pro machine. But you may wonder: is it also compatible with the D1 machine? The answer is YES. In this article, we will discuss some frequently asked questions about D1 and the 40W laser module.

Q1: Can I use the 40W laser module on D1?

Sure. The way you install the 40W laser module on the D1 Pro is pretty much the same as that of the D1.

  • You will need to change the X gantry, the motherboard, and the laser module itself.
  • You don't need to change the limit switch, the trigger piece, or the connection cable.

Please mind that the frames of the two machine models are different.

  • There are two trigger pieces on the Left Y-Axis plate on D1 Pro while there are none on D1.
  • That means you won't be able to use the position limit on D1 and you'll have to disable the limit switch.

If you don't disable the switch, it will trigger the alarm. Please be aware that the laser module may hit the frame if the position limit is off.

Q2: Why won't the Home function work on a D1 with a 40W laser module?

The homing function needs to work with the limit switches.

  • Since D1 doesn't have those, even if you change the motherboard to the one for the 40W, the homing function won't work.
  • Same, if you connect the 40W module to the D1 motherboard, the Home button won't show on XCS.

If you put a 40W laser module on a D1, when the module moves to the upper-left corner, it will keep hitting the frame in the Y-axis direction. Hence, we don't recommend that you use the homing function if you put the 40W laser module on a D1.

Q3: Can I install the limit switches by drilling holes in the Y-axis plate?

It's not recommended to do so. Any issue caused by damaging the machine structure intentionally will not be covered by our post-sales customer service.

Q4: Can I buy the frames separately and build a new D1 Pro 40W?

No. xTool doesn't offer purchase options for frames to assemble a new machine.

Q5: Can I use the 2W, 5W, 10W, and 20W laser modules right on the 40W kit?

No. If you need to change back to the other modules, please change the motherboard at the same time. When you install the 40W upgrade kit on a D1, the laser module connection port on the new motherboard has 9+2 pins and it's not compatible with the other laser modules (2W, 5W, 10W, 20W).
